In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Vietnam War photography, photographic Haiku, European power outage, Nikon's May rebates, gear in the weather and Nixplay.
- Damien Cave considers How Photography From the Vietnam War Changed America (gift link) on the 50th anniversary of the conflict. Many of the images accompanying the article are seared in the memories of those who lived through it. "The war, which formally concluded on April 30, 1975, still elicits grief for all that was burned into memory and reinforced on film," he writes.
- A Photographic Haiku features images from a new exhibition in of black-and-white images of Japan that "captures the country's contemplative beauty."
- The Associated Press curates images of the Power Outage in Spain and Portugal.
- Thom Hogan wonders What Do the May Rebates Tell Us? about Nikon. "My overall assessment is that NikonUSA basically kicked the can a little further down the road when it comes to pricing, probably to exhaust existing inventories prior to the fiscal quarter ending," he writes. "What happens next is pure speculation, as my sources tell me that Nikon, and by extension, NikonUSA, hasn't come to a full decision yet."
- Zach Sutton shares some advice on Caring for Photography Gear in Changing Climates. "Between going from a nicely heated cabin to the wintry outdoors or from a humid area into a dry, air-conditioned house, there are a few critical steps to take to ensure that your gear functions properly," he writes.
- Wes Davis reports Digital Photo Frame Company Nixplay Cut Its Free Cloud Storage to Almost Nothing, or from 100-GB to 500-MB. And you can no longer sync Google Photos albums for free. Instead, Nixplay now offers two paid tiers: Nixplay Lite at $19.99 a year for 100-GB storage and Nixplay Plus at $29.99 a year for unlimited storage.
