The idea behind summer reading is really about that break in the school year during which kids tend to regress. Unless they keep reading.

We still remember some of our summer reading adventures. Paperbacks from the Scholastic Library to start with. Robert Louis Stevenson, for one. Then our high school summer reading lists. Arthur Conan Doyle's hound still echoes through the years.

With three little brothers, having a thick paperback to get through for school during the summer was a welcome defense. Their comic books distracted them for an hour. But our novel lasted a few days during which we could not be disturbed.

There are certainly other benefits to reading. Ones that matter no matter your age. And it's one activity that you can always do (if for nothing else than reading a menu) as long as you live.

An uncle of a childhood friend of ours, alarmed that his nephew was considering dropping out of college, advised him, "Go to school while you can still read!"

It made us laugh. How does anybody lose the ability to read?

But he had a point. Read while your mind is still open to new ideas. You'll find reading keeps it that way with one astonishing adventure after another.

Happy summer reading!
