In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at AP's week, Crete wildfire, cameras vs. phones, lens aberration simulators and pricing digital downloads.

  • The Associated Press presents its Photos of the Week curated by photo editor Anne Marie Belgrave.
  • Reuters posts 23 photos of the Wildfire on Crete. "Firefighters battled for a third day on Friday to put out a wildfire on the Greek island of Crete that has razed forests and olive groves forcing thousands of residents and tourists to leave the area," the editors write.
  • Mike Johnston wonders, Would You Carry a 'Dedicated Camera' if You Didn't Have To? Or put another way, "If you could buy a phone without a camera in it, would you?"
  • Jim Kasson has concocted A More Accurate Lens Aberration Simulation. "But this simulator has its own set of limitations, and I want to be — ahem — transparent about them," he writes.
  • A Reddit poster complains Etsy Has Taught People Your Photography Is Worth Pennies and comes up with a rationale for charging $3,500 for a digital download of an image. The buyer also has to sign an agreement that "the file is for personal display use only, not for commercial, public or resale purposes."

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
