Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?
So we're pleased to present the 611th in our series of Saturday matinees today: Chromatic Exploration.
Ken Goodrich's Chromatic Exploration 1$2_ is derived from macro photography of crystal formations. The 4:17 video is a peaceful, meditative few minutes of textures saturated with color accompanied by music inspired by wind chimes and breaking waves.
And sometimes that's just what you need.
Goodrich got his start in photography when he went to college in Mexico:
My passion for photography was ignited in Mexico City, when I was attending Universidad de las Americas. After growing up in rural California, I found living in a city of 12 million people was tremendously stimulating, as was the change of culture. In the fall of 1968 Mexico City was exploding with student protest, the Olympics and a traditional culture challenged by a rapidly changing world. My camera became my passport into this exciting new environment, both warm and dangerous.
With a grant from Memorex, he was able to volunteer his photographic services after graduation to an effort to bring healthcare to a remote village of Otomi Indians. After seeing his first multi-image installation at the De Young Museum in San Francisco, he bought some slide projectors, a remote control and a reel-to-reel tape deck to produce shows for museums, schools and rock bands.
That was the beginning of a 25 year career in large scale scenic, projection, audio and lighting systems for live events and televised broadcast.
He married in 2000 and moved to Hawaii in 2006 where he and his wife Mary give photo tours.
