In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at an astronomy shortlist, Kourtney Roy, Covid photography at the Getty, LensRentals' most popular rentals and MANGO.
- Kate Mothes features shortlisted images from the ZWO Astronomy Photographer of the Year contest.
- Kourtney Roy's photo series The Tourist "exposes the loneliness and desperation behind even the most glamorous looking vacation snapshots." Mee-Lai Stone quotes Roy, "I learned the hard way that it is very difficult to set up a tripod and flash on a boat in the open sea."
- Getty photography curator Virginia Heckert discusses Photography in the Time of Covid in nine works made during the Covid-19 pandemic by four artists, all with ties to Los Angeles.
- LensRentals compiles its Most Popular Rentals of the Last 19 Years. Of the top 20 camera rentals, 14 are Canon products, 4 are Sony and 2 are Nikon. Lenses and accessories are also reported.
- In The Fashion Fiction We're Willing to Buy, Paul Melcher writes, "When MANGO launched its first fully AI-generated ad campaign last year, it made headlines: one of the first major fashion brands to swap models and sets for pixels and prompts. But now it’s gone a step further." The company has now begun generating actual Product Detail Page images using AI, the main visuals that shoppers rely on to decide whether to click Add to Cart.
