Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?

So we're pleased to present the 613th in our series of Saturday matinees today: Surrounded By Sea.

This 4:14 video celebrates the launch of Surrounded By Sea, a new photo competition from NGO Refugee Rescue, which operates the rescue vessel Mo Chara (My Friend in Irish) from the North Shore of Lesvos, Greece, covering parts of the Aegean Sea.

Held at Belfast Exposed Gallery, the launch brought together Helen Sloan (Game of Thrones photographer), Stuart Bailie (music journalist), Dr. Jose Neves (Belfast Exposed) and Refugee Rescue co-founder Joby Fox to announce the campaign's goals and vision.

As Fox explains, anyone can enter the photo contest by submitting a photo that reflects their personal relationship with the sea along with a small fee that serves as a donation to Refugee Rescue.

Every photo entered will be exhibited in October.

All proceeds from the entry fees and the October exhibition will help fund a new life-saving rescue vessel to replace Mo Chara, Refugee Rescue's retired boat that helped save over 25,000 lives at sea. "Each year, thousands of people, including children, drown in the Mediterranean Sea while fleeing violence, war, and persecution," the humanitarian organization points out. "By entering this competition you will help fund a new rescue vessel to save lives at sea."

Oh, and the name of the new vessel? It's already been decided. It will be christened the Mo Chara II, of course. You can't have too many friends.
