In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Iceland, +Australian National Photographic Portrait Prize, Cade Martin, an orange filter, LensRentals and Margaret Boden.

  • Kate Mothes presents the Otherworldly Aerial Photos of Iceland of Dani Guindo's series Orbital. "I want viewers to feel both a sense of scale and disorientation, inviting them to look twice before recognizing what they see," Guindo says.
  • The Guardian showcases entries in the Australian National Photographic Portrait Prize. Hoda Afshar's portrait of First Nations youth in far north Queensland was chosen from 48 entries as the winning portrait.
  • Suzanne Sease features The Island of the Dolls, the personal project of Cade Martin. Spooky story that begins when, years ago, a little girl drowned among the lilies of the Xochimilco canal.
  • In Models on the Oregon Coastv, Harold Davis worked in black and white with his Leica Monochrom M11 using an orange filter for a photography workshop. The orange filter would have lightened and evened the models' Caucasian skin tones while darkening the ocean, increasing contrast.
  • Zach Sutton lists 14 Things You Didn't Know You Could Rent From Us at LensRentals, including a MacBook Pro.
  • We note the passing of Margaret Boden (gift link), a philosopher who "helped shape the philosophical conversation about human and artificial intelligence for decades," writes Michael Rosenwald. "She identified three types of creativity -- combinational, exploratory and transformational -- by analyzing human and artificial intelligence," he continues before explaining the three approaches.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
