In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at troops with guns, migrants in small boats, stories in hiding, your first camera and Harry Nyquist.
- The Associated Press is on the ground as Troops on Patrol Start Carrying Guns in Washington, D.C.
- In Migrants Risk Lives to Cross the English Channel, Reuters documents a record 28,076 migrants who have crossed the Channel in small boats this year, a 46 percent rise on the same period in 2024.
- Heidi Volpe talks to Yogan Müller about Photobooks and Stories Hiding in Plain Sight. "In my recent projects, I have strived to distill complexity into cohesive pictures," he says.
- In How Your First Camera Will Shape Your Photography, Jason Row remembers his Soviet-built Zenit 11. "That very first role of film helped define my photographic style, one that I have subconsciously honed over the following 40 years," he writes.
- In Nyquist and Aliasing, With Examplesm Jim Kasson applies Swedish-American engineer Harry Nyquist's "simple rule" for sampling. "I’ll go through it in words, first, with examples to follow," he writes. "If you get confused by the words, skip to the examples, than come back to the words."
Apologies for the late posts today. A medical emergency (much like last August's) necessitated a one-day hospital stay. So we were only able to return to our desk late Tuesday. Meanwhile more to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
