Whoever we are celebrating today, it isn't the fraternity of people who have accomplished nothing in their lives (unless you count bankruptcies, divorces and law suits as accomplishments) trying to rid the country of the people who harvest our crops, nurse our elders, care for our children and do all the dirty work the rest of us don't do.

Groups including Bargaining for the Common Good, the National Education Association, Indivisible, Working Families Party, MoveOn, American Federation of Teachers, Public Citizen and 50501 are sponsoring Workers Over Billionaires protests across the nation today. Because, as Liz Shuler, president of the AFL-CIO, put it, "This is a government that is by and for, the CEOs and billionaires."
This kind of talk used to make people suspect you were a Communist. These days, it just means you've noticed you can't find the produce at the market that was once plentiful.
The Associated Press reports over 1.2 million immigrants disappeared from the labor force from January through the end of July, according to preliminary Census Bureau data analyzed by the Pew Research Center. "Immigrants make up almost 20 percent of the U.S. workforce and that data shows 45 percent of workers in farming, fishing and forestry are immigrants, according to Pew senior researcher Stephanie Kramer. About 30 percent of all construction workers are immigrants and 24 percent of service workers are immigrants," Corey Williams adds.
So this Labor Day, we are honoring the immigrants who harvest our food, care for our infirm, build and paint our homes and do the work we can't or won't do that, all the same, must get done. The place isn't the same without you.
Which has never been said of CEOs and billionaires.
