In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at AP's photos of the day, ways to miss a shot, learning photography, words and images and Robert Redford.

  • The Associated Press posts its Top Photos of the Day (well, yesterday).
  • Mike Johnston laments a few of his own in A Thousand Ways to Miss a Shot.
  • Jason Row thinks You're Never Too Old to Learn in Photography. He's 58 and learning something new about photography every week, he says. "There are two reasons for this. The first is that as photography is my primary source of income, it is important for me to keep ahead of new things. The second is the pace of change in photography -- and indeed all technology -- is phenomenal. It's both exciting and scary."
  • Paul Melcher explores The Uncomfortable Relationship Between Words and Images. Words, he argues, turns images into mere illustrations of the text. "We stand at a unique historical moment: possessing the technical capability to return to visual-first communication while maintaining the conceptual sophistication that written language enabled," he writes. "The question isn't whether this transformation will occur, but how quickly we can develop the visual literacy and cultural frameworks necessary to make it work."
  • Greg Whitmore curates photos from the life of Robert Redford, who has died at the age of 89.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
