In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Ancient Forests, mutts, Sally Mann, Lisette Model, moonscapes and photo collections.

  • Kate Mothes features Frédéric Demeuse's photos of The Essential Beauty of Ancient Forests. "In dreamy photographs, Demeuse explores increasingly rare, remote pockets of nature in his ongoing series Forgotten Places," she writes. "He documents these areas to create a visual record of forests and landscapes that require careful preservation, not only for the flora and fauna that reside there but for human health and mental wellness, too."
  • Suzanne Sease spotlights Grace Chon's new book What Kind of Dog Is That? Chon says her favorite breed is a mutt. "Mutts are 100% unique, and when I see one, I see a limited-edition work of art," she says. "As soon as we meet, I find myself taking inventory of all the things I find endearing and irresistibly one-of-a-kind – the long body and stubby legs, the single floppy ear that refuses to stand up straight, or the complete mystery of which breeds could have come together to create this particular mashup of cuteness."
  • In Photographer Sally Mann Warns of 'New Era of Culture Wars' After Art Seizure, Olivia Hampton visits the photographer at her Blue Ridge Mountains studio. "Mann said that artists like her now live with the fear that their art could be seized. 'They're not just reviewing the Smithsonian,' she said. 'They're actively rewriting history. And that's terrifying. This is Orwellian.'"
  • What Lisette Model Saw in Jazz, David A. Graham looks at a new book of Model's photos culled from "some 1,800 negatives from her jazz project, most of which were never printed."
  • Dahlia Ambrose follows up her collection of tips on moon photography with Moon and Moonscapes. "If you wish to photograph the night sky or wish to photograph landscapes or cityscapes at night or during dawn and dusk, having the moon in the frame will help to capture compelling, visually appealing photos," she writes.
  • A Reddit poster in some despair pleads, What Do Y'All DO With All Your Photos? "I'm slowly gaining an ever larger number of photos but I don't know what to do with them. It feels bad for them to languish on my computer after I spent so much time and effort on them but I also don't wanna just dump a few hundred onto my social media."

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
