In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Reuters Pictures, Lee Miller, Sally Mann, AI-generated headshot, image file formats, Adobe Premiere on iOS and BigPicture Exhibits.

  • Reuters Pictures marks its 40th anniversary with a look back at some of the most defining photos from its first decade.
  • A new exhibition at Tate Britain, Lee Miller, explores how the photographer "became one of the most urgent voices of 20th-century art."
  • Inn Odd Man Out (Sally Mann's New Book), Mike Johnston reflects on Sally Mann's new book. But he hasn't read it yet so he can't recommend it. He can quote how it begins, though.
  • Derrick Story just had an encounter with a potential client who opted for an AI-Generated Headshot over an in-person session. "I did get to see the result and it prompted me to do some research on this very popular alternative to photography," he writes. He links to a couple of stories he found informative.
  • In Making Sense of Image File Formats, Jason Row covers JPEG, HEIC and Raw file formats. Among the newer contenders (primarily from phones), he mentions Apple ProRaw and JPEG XL.
  • Adobe Premiere is now available for the iPhone and iPad on the Apple App Store. "Everything you need to create great videos is available for free," the company said. "Only pay when you need Firefly generative AI credits." Mike Polner's blog entry has the details.
  • Featuring 48 images from photographers hailing from 17 countries, this year's BigPicture Exhibit showcases the winners and finalists of the 12th annual BigPicture: Natural World Photography Competition. The exhibit opens Saturday, Oct. 4, at the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park. On Oct. 21, the Discovery Place Science Museum in Charlotte, N.C., will host the exhibit.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
