In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the government shutdown, Bird Photographer of the Year, raindrops, the new Sony macro and sunlight.

  • The Associated Press features scenes of the Government Shutdown as it "sparks a new wave of uncertainty."
  • Winners of the Bird Photographer of the Year contest from over 33,000 entries have been announced. Liron Gertsman is the overall winner for an image of "a magnificent frigatebird silhouetted against the total solar eclipse." Here he is taking the winning shot:

  • In Raindrops on a Rose: The Natural Way, Harold Davis "used my Noctilux 50mm f0.95 with an extension tube on my tripod at f0.95 to isolate the wet petal." Natural raindrops, not sprayed water drops.
  • Zach Sutton presents his first impressions of the new Sony FE 100mm f2.8 Macro GM, which he got his hands on for a brief time. That was enough, however, to convince him "Sony has managed to create the sharpest macro lens on the market today and has me eager to spend more time testing it."
  • Dahlia Ambrose lists some resources to help Use Sunlight Creatively with examples from each.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
