Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?
So we're pleased to present the 625th in our series of Saturday matinees today: Turnley's 'Paris Je t'aime.'
This 10:31 video is a slide show composed of images taken in Paris over 50 years by Peter Turnley. They've from his 320-page book Paris Je t'aime, available on his Web site as a signed copy for $85.
There are 316 photos in the book. We don't know how many of the images from the book are in the video but it would surprise us if any were omitted. Which means at 631 seconds they are displayed for about two seconds each.
You may want to linger over them a bit longer.
On his Web site you can scroll through the page spreads (two images at a time). There's also an option to buy the signed book with a limited edition signed and numbered print (your choice among five options) for $495 for even more prolonged lingering.
One might worry that a 50 year stretch of work might suffer from the differing technologies used to capture the work. But we saw no evidence of that among these black-and-whites.
The years inevitable pass, of course, and are evident in the cars, clothes and price lists, among other clues. But not in the moments Turnley has managed to capture.
Which, no doubt, will make you fall in love with Paris, too.
