In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Chinese surveillance, Hurricane Melissa, Lorenzo Tugnoli, Ian Spanier and autumn photos.

  • The Associated Press documents how Cameras Keep Watch All Over China. "Some cameras swivel, ensuring sweeping views of public squares. Others scan license plates of passing cars, allowing police to track vehicles in real-time. At night, cameras light up across China’s cities, shining lights down alleys and corners."
  • Reuters follows in the wake of Hurricane Melissa as it batters Cuba after devastating Jamaica.
  • Between 2019 and 2023, Lorenzo Tugnoli took photos of Everyday Life for Afghans, hoping to show a side to the country not seen in the news.
  • Suzanne Sease features MoTo, Ian Spanier's personal project photographing portraits of motorcycle riders. "I chose my subjects based on their motorcycles, but in most cases, I focused solely on the riders themselves," he says.
  • Dahlia Ambrose presents 28 Autumn Photos for inspiration. "The weather itself adds to the atmosphere in terms of rain, wind, mist and then the soft golden light from the sun that helps with dramatic shadows," she writes.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
