In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at AP's week, Reuters week, Close-Up Photographer of the Year, photo postcards and smoke (or fog).

  • Thhe Associated Press presents its Top Photos of the Week curated by photo editor Beatrice Larco.
  • Reuters showcases 20 photos of The Week in Pictures from around the world.
  • Jackie Andres looks at eight of the Close-Up Photographer of the Year entries with a link to the shortlist. "After deliberating for a total of 20 hours on Zoom, 22 judges evaluated a record-breaking 12,557 photographs and consolidated its most promising contenders," she writes. "Capturing the diversity of wildlife and nature landscapes across 11 unique categories, each photo highlights stunning close-up, micro and macro perspectives."
  • In Why I Was Late to the Office, Christopher Lützen explores photo postcards, "the social media posts of the early 20th century." He notes, "The photo postcard made it possible for neighbors and other witnesses to report on disasters before newspaper reporters might reach the scene."
  • A Reddit poster asks abut Smoke Without Smoking Machine for a shoot. But they really mean fog, which stays low to the ground rather than smoke which rises and dissipates.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
