In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at West Bank olive harvest, Shiprock, clouds, the brand you know and Claude.

  • The Associated Press captures the West Bank Olive Harvest "as villagers fear more violence by Israeli settlers." Leo Correa reports, "In recent months, the community of Turmus Ayya has endured near-daily incursions by settlers, residents say, including one in which a Palestinian grandmother was beaten unconscious with a spiky club."
  • Kate Mothes celebrates The Planet's Most Stunning Landscapes from the Landscape Photographer of the Years contest, in which Karol Nienartowicz took second place for a stunning shot of Shiprock in New Mexico.
  • In Understanding Long Exposure Photos of Clouds, Federico Alegria shows the effects of exposing for shutter speed, light's magnitude and the light source. The galley he curates is worth the click itself.
  • In 'ByThom Max' in 2026, Mike Johnston seconds Thom Hogan's advice to "stick with the brand you know" when upgrading your gear. Johnston recalls hearing "switching to a new camera would cost you a year." Which could explain why camera reviewers/influencers tend to be, well, unconvincing. At least to those of us sitting on our wallets.
  • Claude, the albino alligator of the California Academy of Sciences who always smiled for photos, has died at 30, the museum announced Tuesday.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
