Matinee: 'Ten Ugly Christmas Sweaters' Share This on LinkedIn   Tweet This   Forward This

6 December 2025

Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?

So we're pleased to present the 633rd in our series of Saturday matinees today: Ten Ugly Christmas Sweaters.

Last year some friends from Reno came into town to spend the holidays with another friend who invited us over for dinner on Christmas Eve with a few other people too. You know, a party.

We much appreciated the company but there was one thing that disturbed us. We wouldn't go as far as to say it was traumatic but here we are a year later still shaking in our fake Santa boots.

If you had been there, you might guess it was the Reno friend who excused himself to wish a happy holiday to a couple of friends spending it in federal prison. It was a long call. Every so often his wife would check to see if he was still on the premises.

But that wasn't it.

It was, instead, his wife, who wore one of the most tasteful Ugly Christmas Sweaters we have every seen. And, you know, we've seen a lot of them in Christmases past.

Hers turned her upper body into a fake Christmas tree using some sort of hairy green tinsel as the tree with gold and red ornaments hung on it. She had the good taste to wear yoga pants along with it, we hasten to add.

The ornaments were not so large that they hindered her help in the kitchen. But they were round and they were shiny and the house cat found them irresistible.

Ugly Christmas Sweaters are a Thing, of course. And we're celebrating them this year with 10 that the Gift Giver found on Amazon. But just to inspire you because you can certainly make your own.

And as one influencer told her audience, you don't have to ruin the base garment. Just buy some tacky Christmas decorations at you local discount store and use safety pins to apply them. Or shop at Goodwill for a deal.

National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day falls on Dec. 19 this year. So get cracking.

And watch out for cats.
