In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Edward Weston, Massimo Giorgetta, Johnston's dislikes, Photoshop's painting tools, the Hasselblad X2D II, labels, a Vivid-Pix deal and ICP's shop.
- In How Edward Weston Transformed Bums, Veg and Egg Slicers Into Sculpture, Mee-Lai Stone recounts how the American photographer's work helps tell the story of the birth of modernism. The images, drawn from the collection of the Wilson Centre for Photography, are from the a new exhibition that traces a turning point in the history of photography. Edward Weston: Becoming Modern is at the MEP, Paris, France until Jan. 25, 2026.
- Kate Mothes features a photo by Massimo Giorgetta of a Two-Inch Tunicate Salp that recently took the bronze award in the Nature/Underwater category of the Tokyo Foto Awards.
- In Photographers I Hate(d), Mike Johnston reveals how he reevaluated some early dislikes. "I learned to see that I just wasn't the audience and so who was I to judge?," he writes. Although that didn't work for everything.
- Julieanne Kost takes about 10 minutes to demonstrate Ten Quick Tips for Working With Painting Tools in Photoshop:
- Jim Kasson posts "the first in what will probably be about a dozen posts" about the Hasselblad X2D II and the Hasselblad X2D II EDR.
- In Why Labels Won't Solve the Trust Crisis, Paul Melcher writes, "While labels describe intent, visual form drives perception. And perception wins."
- Vivid-Pix is offering its Memory Station Software for $99.99 with the code FF2025. The software uses "your existing computer and scanner to digitize your photos in archival quality, restore them with Vivid-Pix's patented image-improvement technology and record audio of your own, your friends' and your family members' memories and feelings."
- The International Center of Photography in New York City is offering Holiday Gift Suggestions from its shop.
More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
