In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at NYT's year in pictures, Reuters' one photo per week, the Annual San Francisco Bakeoff, LensCulture's list of photobooks and free ASMP student memberships.
- The New York Times showcases The Year in Pictures (gift link). "A president returned to power in America and rattled the global order. A wildfire, almost unfathomably, ravaged populated neighborhoods of Los Angeles. A fragile cease-fire took hold in the Gaza war and a conflict in Sudan wore on. Over the course of a turbulent year, photographers captured those and other events with intrepidness and determination -- even as they so often put themselves at risk."
- Reuters showcases One Photo From Every Week of 2025 (that's 50 at the moment).
- Xueer Lu and Io Yeh Gilman judged the Annual San Francisco Bakeoff while Kelly Waldron took the photos. Entries, which baked in "a political element," included the "Vaillanshortbread" Fountain, "Here Lies 'Berried' the Marina Dateway," "Sunshine + Shadows" (made by Patricia Petersen who works on the Sunshine Ordinance Task Force), "Co-existence" (a coyote-shaped cake) and Supervisor Myrna Meglar's "Peace in the Middle East."
- LensCulture has published its Favorite Photobooks 2025 with "more than 50 personal recommendations from experts who are passionate, super-knowledgable and picky about photobooks."
- The American Society of Media Photographers has announced All Students Can Join ASMP for Free beginning in 2026. Any student in a two-year or four-year visual arts program anywhere in the world can become an ASMP Student Member for free, the association said.
More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
