In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at holiday light, ICE in 2025, the Godox AD300Pro II, the new WSJ contract and Darktable 5.4.0.

  • The Associated Press photographs A World Aglow With Holiday Lights, "transforming familiar landmarks into scenes of shared wonder."
  • In Democracy Was the Target, DEI Was the Scapegoat: Key Pictures of 2025, Michael Shaw rounds up a year ICE assaults in seven images.
  • Feroz Khan reviews the Godox AD300Pro II. "With smarter controls, quicker setup and strong performance packed into a light body, it feels more a natural evolution that Godox seems to be doing to all their strong selling models of yesteryear," he writes.
  • Rob Haggert looks at the New WSJ Contract which, he says, "represents a significant step backward for freelancers" by introducing a work for hire clause that allows "WSJ to sublicense our work to third parties for profit."
  • Darktable 5.4.0 has been released. Among the new features are Capture Sharpening to recover details lost due to in-camera blurring, a new tone mapper implementation based on Blender’s AgX display transform and support for multiple workspaces.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look five years back. And please support our efforts...
