Friday Slide Show: Berkeley 25 Years Ago

Twenty-five years ago we took BART to Berkeley with a Canon PowerShot A3330 IS in our camera bag. We had the 16-megapixel digicam with its 28–140mm equivalent optical zoom here for review.
We spent two hours taking photos on the campus of the University of California with the Canon and the Nikon D300. We must have looked desperate because at one point, well, here's our notes:
As I shoot some cherry blossoms behind the Doe reading room a young girl laughs, 'You can't capture Beauty.' I smile. I think she was talking about herself.
She was right, of course. You can't capture Beauty the way you might snag a butterfly in a net. And our bet is thst she is, twenty-five years later, still hard to pin down.
But we did get some lovely shots with that PowerShot. PowerShots were generally more competent than they appeared. In fact, some of our favorite images were shot with PowerShots. Effortlessly.
So it doesn't surprise us that we shot some of our fondest locations on the campus with the PowerShot.
The PowerShot captured JPEGS only. But we edited them in Lightroom's Camera Raw for this slide show. And that made quite a difference:
You may recognize the Campanile and the Golden Bear mascot (above) but the reference room of the main library and the marble steps to it and the catalogs always inspire us.
The Football Players sculpture by Douglas Tilden, who was deaf, is something we would put alongside Michelangelo's David. Tilden portrayed the winner on his knees tending to the injuries of the loser.
Lastly, we have always been impressed by the tribute on the facade of Edwards field. "Patron of sport and fine example of sportsmanship, he believed in youth and youth made him its confident."
We cleared our last hurdles on the track at Edwards Field. We weren't sure we could do it after an absence of three years. But we did.
And for a moment we felt like we had captured Beauty.
