In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Kyiv, Venezuela, Astronomy Photographer of the Year, women with life sentences and new film cameras.
- Reuters presents 33 photos of the Russian Bombardment of Kyiv as Ukraine faces a critical shortage of U.S.-made interceptors.
- Matias Delacroix captured in one shot the Two Earthquakes in Venezuela. "As I walked through the debris, a single illuminated room inside a heavily damaged apartment building stood out against the darkness," he writes. "It immediately became the picture I wanted to make because it seemed to tell the whole story in a single frame: overwhelming destruction, yet one small sign that life might still remain."
- Kate Mothes showcases the ZWO Astronomy Photographer of the Year Shortlist. "Some photographers focus on the juxtaposition of space and the human environment while others take telescopically captured snapshots of distant galaxies and nebulae, creating striking composite images," she writes.
- Former public defender Sara Bennett spent 13 years photographing women convicted of homicide. Her images have now been published in the book Looking Inside. Women with Life Sentences published by Kehrer Verlag.
- The Wirecutter's Ben Keough takes a look at New Film Cameras from Pentax, Lomo, Kodak and a few others. He also discusses buying a used film camera.
