In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Havana, Cheney Orr, Armet Francis' archive, FreeCCR and 23 boxes of family photos.
- Reuters presents 22 photos as Blackouts Plague Havana while the fuel crisis deepens.
- Reuters tells the story of Cheney Orr's photo of Patriot Front Members and a Solitary Woman on a DC Train. "As I photographed members of the group, I noticed the woman you see in this image sitting alone among them," Orr said. "I leaned over seated members of Patriot Front, extended my arm and composed the frame using my camera's screen.".
- The visual arts charity Autograph has received the more than 70,000 images in the photographic estate of Jamaican-British photographer Armet Francis illustrating The African Diaspora.
- Nilofer Khan reports on FreeCCR [LMW], a free film scanning tool that can convert color negative film into accurate positives. Version 1.2.1 is available on GitHub.
- A Reddit poster has become The Official Keeper of My Family's Entire Printed Photo Collection, which includes over 300 lbs. of negatives and prints in 23 boxes. "What can I do to preserve and possibly digitize all of them?" they ask. Commiseration mixed with a few strategies and advice to sharing follows.
