Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?
So we're pleased to present the 664th in our series of Saturday matinees today: Fatherhood & Photography.
This 3:03 video from Aftershoot features photographer Mastin Labs reflecting on his career as a photographer and role as a father. The short version is that the career got in way of his role but he found throwing himself into his role enhanced his career.
His company offers Lightroom Presets, Capture One Styles, video LUTS and mobile profiles that mimic film because they are made from real film scans.
But that's not what he talks about.
He talks about spending time with his two girls. And he starts at the beginning when he was obsessed with making a name for himself. He'd take his camera everywhere -- until, burned out, he put it away when he got home.
So he missed a year or two taking photos of his kids. "And I really regret that," he says.
He points out that the greatest thing you can do for your kids is not pave their way with yellow bricks or give them every toy they want. The greatest thing you can do is spend time with them.
Great photos "unfold" spontaneously when you do that, he says.
And you don't have to go to Disneyland or Legoland to have those moments. It happens when kids are just being kids.
"There's a lot of creativity in kids that, I think, as artists we're trying to get back to," he says. Being around the kids brings that out.
At the same time, you're recording your own life. Because you aren't just taking the kids to one activity or another, but actually participating in their lives.
