In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at an Alcatraz rescue, Ana Mendieta, Geoffrey Lowe and fresh paint.
- The Associated Press documents a search and rescue operation for a Sunken Pontoon Boat in San Francisco Bay near Alcatraz yesterday. The search operation involved divers, helicopters and water vessels, authorities said.
- Kate Mothes reviews Ana Mendieta's (1948-1985) large-scale, immersive survey of her work that opens today at Tate Modern with "more than 120 pieces revisit the groundbreaking artist's key series and empathetic exchange with land and nature."
- Heidi Volpe talks to Geoffrey Lowe about Creating Dreamlike Scenes out of real moments. "When I shoot sports, I am looking in a completely different way from a documentary or press photographer," he says. "I'm purely looking to capture movement and emotion and these can be found in the moments between or around the big moments that journalists need to capture. I am not tied to the rules of journalism; I don't need to ensure my images are real."
- In Pintura Fresca, Walter Mackins captures some fresh pain on Stockton St. "Since becoming a photographer I've found The City always ready for her close-up, blemishes and all," he writes. "I love doing shots here -- can't let tourists have all the fun."
