In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the Venice Film Festival, Caleb Stein, Audubon Photography Awards, Josef Breitenbach and Gloria Steinem.

  • Reuters shares 22 photos from opening day at the Venice Film Festival.
  • Sarah Gilbert showcase images from Down by the Hudson, a new book of images taken over more than a decade by Caleb Stein of a communal swimming creek in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. An exhibition opens Sept. 10.
  • Kate Mothes presents a few images from this year's Audubon Photography Awards. "Across the board, the winning photographs illuminate the world's immense avian diversity, from diminutive, jewel-like hummingbirds to seabirds that dive like torpedos to catch their prey," she writes.
  • In A Photographer's Search for Identity, Nicole Entin looks at the Getty's acquisition of photographs by German-born photographer Josef Breitenbach (1896–1984). "Through the acquisition of works that represent the thematic diversity of his career, his innovative technical processes and the continuing relevance of his migratory experience, Breitenbach's significance in the history of photography is now further affirmed in the Getty Museum collection," she writes.
  • The Associated Press celebrates the life of Gloria Steinem in photos. The Guardian adds a few more from various sources in A Life in Pictures. The leading voice of the U.S. women's movement has died at 92.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
