In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the U.S. Open, thew NFL's opening Sunday, Festival of the Winds, Buzkashi and Romanesco broccoli.
- The Associated Press captures Championship Weekend at the U.S. Open, the year's final Grand Slam tournament. Reuters photographed the Celebrities in attendance.
- AP photo editors curate the NFL's Opening Sunday. The Packers visited the Vikings, the Commanders faced the Eagles and the Cowboys took on the Giants. The Broncos visited the Chiefs on Monday night.
- The Guardian curates images of the Festival of the Winds, celebrated on the second Sunday of September under the blue skies of Bondi beach in Australia since 1978.
- Todd Antony captures the ancient sport of Buzkashi ("goat pulling" In Persian). "Imagine polo, but multiplied by hundreds," he writes. "No teams, no boundaries, no referees in sight."
- In Fractalicious!, Harold Davis teases, "I’ll bet you didn’t know that the number of spirals found on the head of Romanesco broccoli is always a Fibonacci number." He shows a few of his broccoli black-and-white captures illustrating how "each flower is composed of a series of smaller flowers."
More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look five years back. And please support our efforts...
