In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Bird Photographer of the Year, World Gurning Championships, West Bank watch, bicentennial exhibitions, Ash Adams and Blagovesta Semkova.
- Winners of the Bird Photographer of the Year contest have been named from over 24,000 images. A photo of a northern gannet bursting through the ocean's surface taking the grand prize. Kate Mothes looks at the Diverse and Dramatic Behaviors exhibited by the winning entries.
- Reuters presents 21 photos of the craziest, most ridiculous faces at the World Gurning Championships where contestants are judged "on their ability to pull their most contorted expressions."
- Associated Press photographer Leo Correa accompanies a West Bank Family's Nightly Watch on the outskirts of the town of Taybeh. "The settlers, emboldened by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing government, have ramped up attacks on Palestinian towns and villages, harassing residents and setting homes, mosques and fields on fire," he writes. "I think the image works because it makes you question what is going on."
- Kate Mothes also writes about the French Traveling Themed Exhibitions celebrating the bicentennial of photography. "Celebrating 200 years of photography in France, GrandPalaisRmn has organized a series of 11 themed, traveling exhibitions as part of the ambitious initiative titled Grand Angle," she writes. "From 19th-century studio portraits and dance to rural life and the front lines of war, the shows highlight a wide range of subject matter and individuals behind the lens. The selections are drawn primarily from the vast archives of the GrandPalaisRmn and Médiathèque du patrimoine et de la photographie, which steward some 1.8 million digitized images altogether."
- Heidi Volpe interviews Ash Adams on The Art of Leaping Out of Planes to Fight Wildfires for The New Yorker.
- In Photography Made Me a Mother to My Son, Boryana Pandova interviews Blagovesta Semkova about transforming "a lifetime of adversity into images of remarkable emotional power."
More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
