In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Martine Barrat, yesterday in color, Kyiv, Stanford and SSD trimming.

  • Soul of the City is an exhibit of black-and-white images of New York City by French photographer and actor Martine Barrat. She was invited to gang apartments, child boxing matches and a stranger’s wedding.
  • The Associated Press showcases yesterday's Top Photos of the Day "from front page news to powerful moments you may have missed."
  • Reuters presents 15 photos of Damage Across Kyiv after one of Russia's heaviest drone attacks on the Ukrainian capitol.
  • Alan Blinder reports Stanford Used AI To Swap Black Student for Hispanic Student in a Photo (gift link). "Stanford's A.I. policy is clear: The use of A.I. in producing or altering images of Stanford people, events, research, facilities or achievements is strictly prohibited," the university said.
  • In Checking an SSD Trims in Golden Gate, Howard Oakley details which SSDs may not get trimmed and which always do and how to check in either case. "Although some may perform their own housekeeping, if an SSD is left untrimmed for long enough its write speed collapses, as memory blocks then have to be erased immediately before they can be written to," he writes.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
