In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at weekend storms, MTV VMAs Red Carpet, Ernie Sisto, the Rust Belt of photography and teaching photography.
- The Associated Press covers the Weekend Storms across the United States, Hawaii and Mexico.
- Reuters shot every outfit at the MTV VMAs Red Carpetin Los Angeles.
- Anika Burgess describes How Ernie Sisto Shot the Empire State Building Disaster (gift link) in 1945 when a B-25 Army bomber crashed into the 78th and 79th floors. Sisto used a 4x5 Speed Graphic whose sheet film meant he had to get it right the first (and only) time he pressed the shutter. He found a ledge above the wreckage, leaned out and told his colleagues, "Hold my legs while I lean way out." Four times so he could change film.
- In Here in the Rust Belt, Mike Johnston reacts to a reader's characterization of digital photo blogs and sites in an era of video channels on the subject.
- A Reddit poster asks for help Teaching Photography to high school seniors. Firs comment asks, "Does it have to be just stills photography or can you add in videography?" Ha.
More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look five years back. And please support our efforts...
