In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at China's National Day, Paris Fashion Week, Deana Lawson, Relight in Photoshop (beta) and the Fighting Zebras.

  • The Associated Press shows China's National Day as an occasion for both celebrations and protests.
  • Reuters showcases 26 photos of Paris Fashion Week.
  • In 'Take These Pictures and Run' (gift link), Susan Dominus visits photographer Deana Lawson to talk about her oldest and newest portraits. "These new photos we were staring at were taken in an instant, shots of photos captured by a machine, inhuman and inhumane, with a detachment that seemed to be in direct contrast with her earlier photography, work with an ennobling quality," she writes.
  • Kris Kashtanova demonstrates Photoshop (beta) Relight, a new filter that lets you "change lighting of your images in real time." Rob de Winter adds, "The quality is incredibly high, even when you compare the original with the relit version. The sliders also feel very intuitive and you really have control over how you shape the lighting." The New Relight Layer filter is in the Layers menu.
  • Gabe Fernandez reports Calif HS Football Team Forced by In-N-Out Lawyer to Scrub Viral Team Photos. Glenn Silva photographed the Fighting Zebras at their favorite hangout, In-N-Out Burger. "It showcases a little bit more than just football," Silva said about the shoot. "It showcases where they hang out because those are memories. When they get older, those kids will remember the football and they'll remember hanging out at In-N-Out. Who doesn't like In-N-Out?" But an unnamed member of In-N-Out's trademark team sent Silva an email with the subject line: "Unauthorized Filming and Photography at In-N-Out Burger -- Immediate Removal Request."

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
