Wednesday Lunch at Home

30 July 2025

Joyce is managing these Wednesday home lunches better, getting up and down the stairs with less trouble. I'm not so sure I can say the same about her caregiver.

Today she was, as always, still in bed when I got there. I told her it was time to get up to go home for lunch. She didn't want to go.

She had broken a fingernail. So I cut her fingernails after she dressed. Then we went. But she complained about feeling unsteady as we walked to the car. She must have asked every two feet how much further it was and where we were going.

She has no sense of where her room is, where the parking lot is, where the fish tank is, anything. Monday when the RNAs walked her around the facility, she kept asking them how much further she had to go. But she actually walked one long hallway further than they expected. One and a quarter times around without a rest.

But getting out of the car at the house in the wind, she nearly fell when her walking stick collapsed. And then she kept grabbing my hand while I tried to tighten it while holding her up by the belt. "I'm falling!" she screamed. but she wasn't. I had the belt.

Today, I heated up some clam chowder again while she was eating a blueberry yogurt she didn't want. I don't dare actually cook anything because I think I have to keep an eye on her.

I put an Ernestine Anderson CD on the stereo this time. I'm Coming Home Again:

She likes her. And it calmed her. And she smiled. And I took her picture.

"I like that," she said. "I'm happy."
