The 'Life Is Too Short' Puzzle

7 October 2025

When Joyce finished her three sets of 126 steps on the SciFit half an hour before lunch, I suggested she try a new puzzle. Titled "Nature," it depicted two dolphins rising up out of the ocean under a dark sky with a few bright spots.

When I took it over to the table in the occupational therapy kitchen, I realized the box had never been opened. But I can't see very well still, so I took it to Cassie and asked if there was a trick to opening the box.

Yeah, a pair of scissors. She grabbed a pair and ripped open three sides of the box so Joyce could get going on what, it turns out, is a thousand piece puzzle whose pieces were the size of a fingernail. And all the same color!

"That's evil, Michael," Cassie laughed.

Joyce gave it a try, looking for pieces with straight edges, including the four corners. Half an hour later, she'd gotten through half the pieces. Suggesting, perhaps, it's a group project.

Anyway, it was lunch time. And life is too short to skip lunch for a puzzle that might take a week to put together. If everyone pitched in.
