In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention (with more than 140 characters). This time we look at a Tiffen rebate, Darktable, Acorn and iOS 7.

  • Tiffen is offering a $100 mail-in rebate for customers who purchase its Lowel GL-1 Power LED Light, designed with wedding and event photographers Brian Marcus and John Solano, between Sept. 1 and Nov. 1.
  • The free Darktable 1.2.3 [LMW] "open source photography workflow application and Raw developer" adds support for the Sony RX100 II, Olympus E-P5 and Canon 70D); more white balance presets; new noise profiles; support for cache sizes up to 8GB; more guides for crop/rotate; OpenCL support for the nVidia GeForce GT330 and more.
  • Flying Meat has released its $49.99 Acorn 4.1.1 [M] with support for drop-and-draf, improved Command-click selections, filter fixes for OS X 10.9 and more.
  • Derrick Story suggests easing into iOS 7 on your iPad (assuming you can finally download and install it). On an iPad 2, we've had no problem with the new display type or processing speed. In fact, the system furniture seems to get out of the way of the content in a new and much appreciated way. The new minimalism will no doubt, though, be hard on older eyes.

More to come...
