In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention (with more than 140 characters). This time we look at Hobby's recommended gear, Flickr embedding, Kost's 2014 slide show and a slide show of Volunteers of America Santas.

  • Strobist David Hobby has published his Recommended Gear List, the stuff he recommends without reservation. Bookmark it -- he's going to keep it up-to-date. It's more than a list, though. It's some common-sense wisdom about what makes gear worth owning.
  • Derrick Story covers the Flickr Embedding Update, noting it isn't perfect (yet) for publicly shared images. To get to the sharing icon, BTW, click on the full-screen icon. The embed button is </>.
  • Brace yourself for the Best of 2013 photo shows coming up. Or here's a better idea. Do like Julieanne Kost and make a slide show of your own best images "to look back at the year and reflect upon the places that I've gone, the people I've met and the things that I paid attention to." She's just posted Fractured Moments -- 2013 Year in Review.
  • "Susan Meiselas was walking near her apartment," begins From the Bowery, Comfort and Joy, "when she spotted a figure in a crimson suit, a stocking cap with fur trim and a long white beard making his way down the sidewalk before disappearing into the subway. Curious, Ms. Meiselas followed him."

More to come...
