Auld Lang Syne, My Friend! Share This on LinkedIn   Share This on Google   Tweet This   Forward This

31 December 2013

We sing it every year (thanks to Guy Lombardo) but what does it actually mean? Well, this year, as a public service, we're providing a translation of that peculiar song of Scottish poet Robert Burns titled Auld Lang Syne:

Auld Lang Syne

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne!

[Chorus between each verse]
  For auld lang syne, my dear,
  For auld lang syne.
  We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
  For auld lang syne.

And surely ye'll be your pint stowp!
And surely I'll be mine!
And we'll tak a cup o'kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

We twa hae run about the braes,
And pou'd the gowans fine;
But we've wander'd mony a weary fit,
Sin' auld lang syne.

We twa hae paidl'd in the burn,
Frae morning sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar'd
Sin' auld lang syne.

And there's a hand, my trusty fere!
And gie's a hand o' thine!
And we'll tak a right gude-willie waught,
For auld lang syne.

So Long Ago

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
And days so long ago?

[Chorus between each verse]
  For so long ago, buddy
  For so long ago,
  We'll take a cup of kindness yet,
  For so long ago.

Surely you'll buy a pint for yourself!
Surely as I'll buy my own!
And we'll take a cup of kindness yet,
For so long ago.

We two have scoured the hills
And plucked a lot of daisies;
But we've wandered a long ways
Since so long ago.

The two of us have paddled up creek,
From morning sun til noon;
But wide seas have roared between us
Since so long ago.

Here's my hand, true-blue brother,
Give me one of yours!
And we'll take a strong, straight drink,
For so long ago.
