So this is Nikon's smallest and lightest superzoom? For the System 1 it is indeed.
Nikon's new System 1 70-300mm zoom equates to a 189-810mm 35mm range. More than you can hand hold, but it does include Vibration Reduction so you can at least pretend to focus.
Toss in nano crystal coating, a focus limit switch and Super ED glass to round out the picture. And don't forget how quickly System 1 cameras focus. Hmmm.
Nikon said the lens will also be available with a tripod mount.

1 Nikkor VR 70-300mm f4.5-5.6
The world's smallest and lightest super-telephoto zoom lens with an angle of view equivalent to that of a 810mm
TOKYO -- Nikon Corp. is pleased to announce the release of the 1 Nikkor VR 70-300mm f4.5-5.6, a new 1 Nikkor lens for Nikon 1 advanced cameras with interchangeable lenses.
The 1 Nikkor VR 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 is the world's smallest and lightest super-telephoto zoom lens, covering the 70-300mm range of focal lengths (angles of view equivalent to 189-810mm in 35mm 135 format). Equipped with a retractable barrel mechanism, the lens is compact for storage. It also offers a vibration reduction mechanism that effectively reduces the effects of camera shake equivalent to a 4.0-stop increase in shutter speed at the maximum telephoto position and 4.5 stops at the maximum wide-angle position. These features make the lens easy to take with you anywhere despite the fact that it is a super-telephoto lens. Designed as a super-telephoto lens that offers both flexibility and functional beauty, it is well-suited to capture of distant or moving subjects, including wildlife, landscapes, airplanes, motor sports, trains and athletic meets.
The 1 Nikkor VR 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 is equipped with a number of features that support super-telephoto zoom photography. It is the first 1 Nikkor lens to be equipped with a focus limit (Full/Limit) switch, which enables quick focusing on distant subjects by restricting focus distance to greater distances. The lens is also equipped with a focus ring that enables intuitive focusing and supports accessories like the Tripod Mount TR-N100 (available separately) for shooting using a tripod.
In addition, Nano Crystal Coat, which effectively reduces ghost and flare, has been adopted for the 1 Nikkor VR 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 and it is the first 1 Nikkor lens for which Super ED glass, which markedly reduces axial chromatic aberration, has been utilized. Optical technologies like these, which are exclusive to Nikon, enable sharp and clear rendering of main subjects while out-of-focus portions exhibit smooth, clean blur.
Nikon has worked hard to expand the lineup of 1 Nikkor lenses since they were first introduced. The addition of the 1 Nikkor VR 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 to the current lineup of 11 lenses brings the range of focal lengths covered by 1 Nikkor lenses to 6.7mm to 300mm (angles of view equivalent to 18mm to 810mm in 35mm 135 format) for coverage of a broad range of focal lengths, from ultra wide-angle to super-telephoto.
1 Nikkor VR 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 Primary Features
- The 1 Nikkor VR 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 is a super-telephoto zoom lens covering the 70-300mm range of focal lengths (angles of view equivalent to 189-810mm in 35mm 135 format). This allows users to fill the frame with faraway action or give images a busy, compressed look. It also enables shallow depth-of-field that makes subjects stand out from backgrounds.
- Adoption of a retractable barrel mechanism makes the lens the world's smallest and lightest in its class. This makes the lens highly portable and easy to handle despite being a super-telephoto zoom lens.
- The lens is equipped with a vibration reduction mechanism that effectively reduces the effects of camera shake equivalent to a 4.0-stop increase in shutter speed at the maximum telephoto position and 4.5 stops at the maximum wide-angle position.
- It is the first 1 Nikkor lens equipped with a focus limit switch, which enables high-speed AF and decreases the amount of time required to focus on distant subjects by restricting focus distance to greater distances.
- It is the first 1 Nikkor lens for which Super ED glass, which markedly reduces axial chromatic aberration, has been adopted.
- Nano Crystal Coat, which effectively reduces ghost and flare, has also been adopted.
- It is equipped with M/A (autofocus with manual override) mode, which enables manual focusing by rotating the focus ring for intuitive fine adjustment of focus while autofocus is operating. This enables smooth recording of movies.
- Utilization of Nikon's exclusive linear voice coil motor for autofocus drive enables very fast and precise autofocusing and smoother acquisition of the intended subject with phase-detection AF built into Nikon 1 cameras.
- Shooting similar to that of basic telephoto macro photography is made possible with a maximum reproduction ratio of approximately 0.41x (equivalent in 35mm format).
- The Tripod Mount TR-N100 (available separately), an accessory that enables use of a tripod, will be released at the same time as the lens. The power of this accessory is best demonstrated when conditions demand maximum camera stability, whether framing still images and movies with great precision or shooting night landscapes or other dimly lit scenes that require slow shutter speeds.
- Just as with all 1 Nikkor lenses, the 1 Nikkor VR 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 is designed to be quiet. When used with the quiet electronic shutter built into Nikon 1 cameras, operation is nearly silent.
