Panasonic Announces FZ1000 Share This on LinkedIn   Share This on Google   Tweet This   Forward This

12 June 2014

Panasonic has announced the $898 FZ1000 with a 1" 20.1-megapixel sensor and a 25-400mm f2.8-4.0 zoom. Available later this summer, the FZ1000 captures 4K video in 3840x2160-pixel frames at 30 frames per second with a bit rate of 100Mbps. Which means it can extract 8-Mp stills from the video.

Panasonic calls its 4K video and 8-Mp still extraction "hybrid photography." Think of it as a 30-fps continuous shooting mode.

Whether video or still, it's the same lens. With 15 elements in 11 groups, getting to 400mm does require a variable maximum aperture, closing up to f4 pretty quickly. Its five aspherical glass lenses achieves "beautiful, evenly smooth defocus with invisible edge line," according to the company.

Complemented with five-axis optical image stabilization, the FZ100 also features 275 percent faster focusing compared to the FZ200. Depth From Defocus technology shortens the time to set the focus, instantaneously calculating the distance to the subject by evaluating two images with different sharpness levels to achieve autofocus in 0.09 second at wide-angle and 0.17 second at telephoto.

The distinguishing features of the FZ1000 are its 4K video and 25-400mm equivalent zoom range. That 1-inch sensor is not unmatched but welcome, too. The full list of highlights includes:
