In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention (with more than 140 characters). This time we look at a mug shot in Iowa, wireless scanning, a Nikonian fundraiser and going fishing with Pete Collins.

  • There are new rules in Iowa. A judge warned he would punish both the Iowa weekly newspaper and photographer Jerry Blue for "not obtaining advanced permission to take photos during Monday's hearing for Oelwein Mayor Jason Manus and not wearing a badge identifying himself." The paper ran a mug shot instead.
  • On Macintouch's Scanner's Forum, David Abramowitz discovers why his HP PhotoSmart 2710 all-in-one won't scan from Preview or Image Capture under Mavericks. Go ahead, guess. "The issue as it turns out is Airport. Airport does not support scanning, just printing." Our solution to sharing a scanner is a wireless all-in-one, like our Canon MG8120, which scans just fine from Preview or Image Capture in Mavericks.
Update (14 Aug.): Today Abramowitz revealed he had changed his network security from WPA, which the HP device does support, to WPA2-only, consequently dropping the HP from the network. Changing the Airport Extreme from WPA2-only to WPA2/WPA restored the HP (which he also plugs into the Airport's USB port) to the wireless network. Got that?
  • The not-for-profit Nikonians has started a $100,000 Fundraising Campaign to modernize its Web site, deliver more content and organize more events.
  • At Photoshop Insider Pete Collins fished for a solution to those times when we become "stressed out about the very activity that we started because it brought us such joy." And it's a whopper.

More to come...
