In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention (with more than 140 characters). This time we look at a trick for boosting magnification, two improvements for photographers in Photoshop CC 2104, the new and improved Flickr and Classic Vinyl.

  • Derrick Story tapes a 50mm lens to a 100mm macro lens to get even closer in his c't Digital Photography piece titled Gaffer's Tape Plus Prime Equals Magnification Boost. "The magnification increase is substantial. And to be honest, the image quality is pretty good," he writes.
  • In Improved Image Size and Smart Sharpen Technologies in Photoshop CC, Julieanne Kost shows off two significant improvements to Photoshop. Image resizing has an improved algorithm (Preserve Details) for enlargement and an Automatic setting to change methods for enlarging and reducing (with sharpening). Smart Sharpen isn't new but a new algorithm reduces noise.
  • In The New and Improved Flickr, photographer Thomas Hawk applauds the change in staff at Flickr, "I think the future really looks bright for Flickr and am happy to see the sort of rebirth and revitalization that is taking place there."
  • Gavin Seim has released Classic Vinyl, a set of 35 classic color Lightroom plug-ins for an introductory price of $25 this month. Classic Vinyl "brings pure, simple color processing that's not over the top. It gets us back to a simple process that is often forgotten in our fast paced digital world," he notes.
