Twitpic To Shut Down Sept. 25 Share This on LinkedIn   Share This on Google   Tweet This   Forward This

CEO Noah Everett has announced Twitpic will cease operations on Sept. 25. "You will be able to export all your photos and videos. We'll let everyone know when this feature is live in the next few days," he wrote in a blog post explaining the decision.

The service, which posts photos and videos as they happen, ran afoul of Twitter. Everett wrote:

A few weeks ago Twitter contacted our legal demanding that we abandon our trademark application or risk losing access to their API. This came as a shock to us since Twitpic has been around since early 2008, and our trademark application has been in the USPTO since 2009.

But during a recent published-for-opposition phase of the trademark process, Twitter told Twitpic's counsel the company could be denied access to Twitter's API if it did not give up the mark.

Unfortunately we do not have the resources to fend off a large company like Twitter to maintain our mark which we believe whole heartedly is rightfully ours. Therefore, we have decided to shut down Twitpic.

John Gruber at Daring Fireball suggested the company might simply pick a more original name rather than shut down.

Meanwhile, don't expect to see Twitpic post to its Twitter account.
