Focal Press has announced the publication of Alternative Photographic Processes by Brady Wilks in which he demonstrates analog and digital techniques of manipulating the image both before and after capture.

"Artists are looking for alternatives to popular methods to help define their own unique creative voice," Wilks said. "Not solely for the sake of being different, but also for the resolve that comes from crafting an image by hand."

Wilks, who is a working artist and educator, presents a range of new approaches and methods to achieve popular techniques, as well as providing step-by-step guidance for an array of unique techniques meant to inspire artists working in various mediums.

Among those techniques are traditional emulsion transfers and lifts as well as modern equivalents like the acrylic gel lift and transfer.

In an artist statement explaining his approach, Wilks said, "It is easy for alternative processes to become novelty, resulting in art that is more about how it was made. However, I carefully integrate the process into the series. I ask myself, which process best supports the work and the intent of the concept."

Alternative Photographic Processes, which lists for $39.95, is available for $32.81 via our amazon.com affiliate program.

Focal Press Publishes 'Alternative Photographic Processes'

So you think alternative photography is another name for historical techniques? Think again, because in his new book, artist and educator Brady Wilks has proven otherwise. Alternative Photographic Processing is a book about alternative ways of combining all aspects of photography and printmaking to create truly unique works of art.

Alternative Photographic Processing teaches techniques, both analog and digital, allowing artists to bring a personal touch through manipulation of a photograph, the negative and the print. This book stands apart from recent publications on alternative processes by presenting a range of new approaches and methods to achieve popular techniques, as well as providing step-by-step guidance for an array of unique techniques meant to inspire artists working in various mediums.

Through detailed guidance, working artist examples and info about the contemporary use of these processes, this book will provide instruction for students, educators and artists to expand their creative toolbox.

About the Author

Brady Wilks is a working artist, author and educator who is currently residing and exhibiting in the mid-Atlantic area. He also leads workshops and teaches college courses in traditional, digital and alternative photographic processes.

"The photographer's hand is seldom seen," he says, "especially when measuring it against the endless ocean of images in our current digital era. Many of the photographs being made look alike due to the number of images being created and the camera format, digital latitude and basic filters commonly used. Artists are looking for alternatives to popular methods to help define their own unique creative voice. Not solely for the sake of being different, but also for the resolve that comes from crafting an image by hand."
