Dropbox To Shut Down Carousel Share This on LinkedIn   Share This on Google   Tweet This   Forward This

7 December 2015

In a blog post today Dropbox announced it will shut down Carousel, its photo sharing service, as well as Mailbox. "With both, we aspired to extend the simplicity of Dropbox to other parts of our users' lives," the post noted.

Carousel will be shut down on March 31, 2016, a month after Mailbox.

All is not lost, however. "We'll be taking key features from Carousel back to the place where your photos live -- in the Dropbox app," the post continued.

In a related post on the Carousel blog, the Carousel team added, "After Carousel shuts down you'll still be able to view and share your photos in the Photos tab views on the web and in your Dropbox mobile apps."

For more information see the text of the posts below.

Saying goodbye to Carousel and Mailbox

In 2013, we acquired Mailbox because we believed in the way it was making mobile email better. In 2014, we launched Carousel to create a new way to experience and share photos. With both, we aspired to extend the simplicity of Dropbox to other parts of our users' lives.

Building new products is about learning as much as it's about making. It's also about tough choices. Over the past few months, we've increased our team's focus on collaboration and simplifying the way people work together. In light of that, we've made the difficult decision to shut down Carousel and Mailbox.

The Carousel and Mailbox teams have built products that are loved by many people and their work will continue to have an impact. We'll be taking key features from Carousel back to the place where your photos live -- in the Dropbox app. We'll also be using what we've learned from Mailbox to build new ways to communicate and collaborate on Dropbox (you can see early signs of this focus with Paper).

We're committed to making the transitions from these products as painless as possible. We've posted more information on the Carousel blog and the Mailbox blog and we'll be communicating details directly to users of both apps in the coming days. Mailbox will be shut down on February 26th 2016 and Carousel will be shut down on March 31st 2016.

To our Carousel and Mailbox users, thank you for embracing these products -- and we're sorry. It's not easy to say goodbye to products we all love. But ultimately, we think this increased focus will help us create even better experiences for you in the months and years to come.

Thank you for using Carousel

When we introduced Carousel in April 2014, we believed a standalone app would be a better way to experience photos. We're proud to have created a photo app that many of you use and love. However, over the past year and a half, we've learned the vast majority of our users prefer the convenience and simplicity of interacting with their photos directly inside of Dropbox. With this in mind, we've had to make a difficult decision.

On March 31st, we're shutting down Carousel as a standalone app and returning to a single Dropbox photo experience. Carousel has always been a way to view and interact with photos stored in Dropbox. All the photos in your Carousel timeline will remain safe in your Dropbox where they've always been. If you have photos you received through conversations or shared albums that you want to save, check out the instructions in our Help Center.

After Carousel shuts down you'll still be able to view and share your photos in the Photos tab views on the web and in your Dropbox mobile apps. In the coming months, we'll integrate some key features of Carousel into the core Dropbox app. For more details, check out our Help Center.

Thank you for using Carousel and for all the love and feedback along the way. And more than that, thank you for letting us be part of the memories and moments you share with one another.
