In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention (with more than 140 characters). This time we look at Tamron f1.8 VC prime lenses, the top 100 AP photos of the year, an appraisal of DNG and a BorrowLenses discount.

  • Roger Cicala looks at the Tamron f1.8 VC Prime Lenses Sharpness MTF Curves even though he didn't plan to do it. He was nagged into it by, well, readers. "Now I do see the attraction," he admits.
  • AP Photos Top 100 News Images of 2015 was selected by AP Director of Photography Santiago Lyon and Deputy Director of Photography Denis Paquin. It was a tough year. Here's the evidence.
  • Martin Evening discusses DNG Pros, Cons and Myths, praising its archival features, validation, performance, compression, composites and compatibility with older software. OTOH, he points out the conversion time, compatibility with other software and metadata changes. As for the myths, the list includes compromised Raw data, standard color profile conversion, bias and JPEG conversion.
  • BorrowLenses is offering a 15 percent discount on any rental placed through Dec. 18 that begins by Dec. 22 when you use the code TAKE15.

More to come! Meanwhile, please support our efforts...
