Leica has announced its 36th Oskar Barnack Award recognizing both professional photographers and those new to the art will be graced with greatly enhanced prizes with cash values over €80,000. The 12 winners in three categories will be honored in Germany at a special ceremony later this year.
The Oskar Barnack Award is given in three categories:
- The Grand Prize winner will receive a cash prize of €25,000, as well as their own Leica M-System camera and lens, valued at an additional €10,000.
- The cash value prize for this year's Newcomer Award will be doubled from previous years to €10,000 and the winner will also receive a Leica M rangefinder camera and lens.
- Finally, 10 additional photographers will be recognized among the year's best photographers and awarded cash prizes of €2,500 each.
Every finalist's portfolio will be featured on the official Web site and published in a special issue of Leica Fotografie International Magazine.
Submissions must be one self-contained series of 10 to 12 images "in which the photographer perceives and documents the interaction between man and the environment with acute vision and contemporary visual style -- creative, groundbreaking and innovative."
An international jury awards the Leica Oskar Barnack Award. This year's judges are Karin Rehn-Kaufmann, art director Leica Galerie International (Salzburg, Austria); JH Engström, photographer and last year's award winner (Karlstad, Sweden);, Christine Ollier, art director, Galerie Filles du Calvaire (Paris); Chris Boot, executive director, Aperture Foundation (New York); and Lorenza Bravetta, director, camera, Italian Centre for Photography (Turin, Italy).
Oskar Barnack (1879-1936) was the inventor of the Leica, using the prototype camera he developed, today known as the Ur-Leica, to capture various events in a series of images, becoming one of the earliest photographers to document the relationships between man and the environment. The Oskar Barnack Award was first given in 1979 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Barnack’s birth.
Entries will be accepted from March 1 through April 15. To submit an application and project, as well as read the terms and conditions, visit the Oskar Barnack Award 2016 page.
