In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention (with more than 140 characters). This time we look at Matt Stuart, the San Francisco Whale Tour, Apple's new Union Square retail store and a Canon EF 28-560mm patent.

  • Matt Stuart's London street photography will be exhibited at the Somerset House for Photo London 2016. "I'm fascinated by people's different behaviors," he says. "I could be doing this photography wherever I lived, it just so happens to be London, the people are my main interest, not the place."
  • Bonnie Tsui bravely took a $99 San Francisco Whale Tour to the remote and unwelcoming Farallone Islands. "Suddenly an awful smell washed over the boat. Our marine biologist laughed when he told us that it was nothing more than the stinky baleen breath of a whale." For your bucket list.
  • In My thoughts on Apple's new retail store strategy, Jim Dalrymple describes five new features in the San Francisco Apple Store at Union Square, which open to the public tomorrow.
  • In Patent: Canon EF 28-560mm f2.8-5.6, Craig Blair details a proposed 18x vacation lens for a full-frame dSLR that would compete with super zooms. If it ever gets built.

More to come! Meanwhile, please support our efforts...
