"Women have been fundamental to the art of photography since, well, there were photographs," writes Vice magazine Photo Editor Elizabeth Renstrom in the issue's Editor's Note. "They've been schlepping equipment, huffing darkroom fumes and sharp-elbowing for scarce gallery space since before they could vote, become astronauts or run marathons without people thinking their uteruses would fall out."

In addition, Vice magazine has collaborated with Instagram on a series of videos taking readers behind the scenes at the magazine with interviews and studio visits with select photographers from the issue. The series will be featured on Instagram throughout the month of August.

Vice Magazine's 15th Annual Photo Issue Spotlights Women Photographers From Around the World

Featuring celebrated veteran photographers like Jill Freedman and Val Wilmer and new talents like Atong Atem and Izumi Miyazaki, the 15th Annual Vice magazine Photo Issue highlights the works of 38 women photographers from across the globe

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Today, Vice magazine presents its 15th Annual Photo Issue. For the first time, Vice is dedicating the issue exclusively to the work of groundbreaking women photographers. A mix of stunning art portfolios and incisive works of photojournalism, the oversized, 184-page issue features the work of 38 female photographers, including works from storied veterans and relative rookies.

Vice magazine has assembled an impressive list of photographers for the issue, with photographers Magdalena Switek and Carolyn Drake (Magnum Photos) contributing two separate covers for the magazine. 18-year-old Izumi Miyazaki uses her piece, Potato, as a wry exploration of stereotypes, while veteran photographer Jill Freedman contributes The Boys Club, a previously unpublished portfolio examining masculinity and manhood -- a culmination of her decades-long study of all types of men, seen through a woman's eyes.

Endia Beal uses her project Am I What You're Looking For? to capture college-age minority women cautiously bridging the gap between their identities and society's expectations, while Saudi Arabian photographer Ayesha Malik contributes a portfolio documenting the country's changing character and its dichotomies. A full list of photographers featured in the magazine can be found below.

In addition, Vice magazine, in a collaboration with Instagram, has made a series of videos taking readers behind the scenes of the making of the magazine along with interviews and studio visits with select photographers from the issue. The series will be featured on Instagram throughout the month of August.
