In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention (with more than 140 characters). This time we look at the Phottix Ares trigger, light modifiers, the Canon 5D Mark IV, Lolly Kakumani's iPhone photos and a big Rocky Nook discount.

  • Strobist David Hobby recommends the $55 Phottix Ares remote flash trigger before considering more sophisticated options. And Zack Sutton conducts The Ultimate Light Modifier Shoot Out and Test at LensRentals, concluding, "A lot of the lights modifiers had very similar results and weren’t nearly as unique as many would try to claim." How close you set the light to the subject was the biggest factor.
  • Derrick Story wonders Who is the Canon 5D Mark IV for?. "I'm waiting to see what Olympus is going to do the the OM-D E-M1 update, and the OM-D E-M5 Mark III," he writes. "The OM-D line is providing me with everything that I want right now. And they are far more affordable." We have to admit we pick up our mirrorless more often than the dSLR (we shot the PowerEgg with it).
  • Lisa Jo Rudy discovers How Lolly Kakumani Creates Beautiful Artistic iPhone Photos. Snapseed and iColorama are two of her favorite tools. "I have a good digital camera, but I haven't used it," Kakumani said. "I use my iPhone 100 percent of the time."
  • Rocky Nook is offering a 40 discount on all photography books (paperback, ebook and bundles) through Aug. 28 when you used the coupon code LEARN at checkout.

More to come! Meanwhile, please support our efforts...
