In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention (with more than 140 characters). This time we look at Valery Faminsky, JPEG color shifts, going on location with McNally and the Lightroom mobile camera.

  • James Estrin presents 23 images in Rare Photos Show World War II From the Soviet Side. After photographer Arthur Bondar acquired the war-time negatives of Soviet war photographer Valery Faminsky he began scanning the collection sampled here. "I looked through the negatives and realized I held in my hands a huge piece of history that was mostly unknown to ordinary people, even citizens of the former USSR," he said."
  • In Cameras and Skin Tones, Thom Hogan evaluates the JPEG color shifts made by Canon, Fujifilm, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax and Sony. And what you can do about it. "You are not enslaved to the camera company's choices," he points out.
  • Want to follow Joe McNally around for five days on location? In Five Days in the Field, On Video, he describes how a crew from ThinkTAPLearn did just that and even peeked at post production. You can get the video Location Photography: On Assignment with Joe McNally for $74.50 (regularly $149). It's the first of several.
  • Julieanne Kost explains how to gt Quick Access to the Lightroom mobile Camera on iOS. Two addition tips: 1) You have to be on the first screen of Notifications (we're always looking at the second) and 2) it doesn't get placed in Siri App Suggestions but in its own panel where it offers several options.

More to come! Meanwhile, please support our efforts...
